Welcome to Spodden Park

Spodden Park is a 30-hectare site located at the foot of the Spodden Valley, 1km north west of Rochdale town centre.  Previously known as the former Turner Brothers Asbestos factory, the site has a long history of industrial use, including asbestos manufacture dating back to the 19th century.

The site was purchased by specialist remediation company ESG Trading Ltd in October 2021.

Keeping the local community updated

The successful remediation of Spodden Park provides an opportunity for the site to contribute to Rochdale’s future prosperity, set within an improved natural setting.

We are very aware of the sensitivities that have surrounded previous attempts to regenerate the site and are working closely with Rochdale Council, the Environment Agency and the Health & Safety Executive, to develop a remediation strategy that exceeds statutory requirements.

Since purchasing Spodden Park in November 2021 you may have noticed increased activity on site as we make the site secure and continue our assessments to fully inform the remediation strategy which will be agreed with regulators.

Our most recent activity on site has included:

  • De-vegetation of the site
  • Sampling and lab analysis for asbestos on stockpiles ahead of sorting and screening operations
  • Building asbestos surveys
  • Northern Woodland initial site investigation
  • Building & structural surveys
  • Ecological surveys
  • Safe removal of fallen trees

Over the last two months, activity on site has reduced. This was to allow time for the project team to review the various site assessments, which have now been uploaded to our documents page.

The next steps will be to develop a full remediation strategy for agreement with Rochdale Council, the Environment Agency and the Health & Safety Executive.
